William Henry Owen was born in 1875 at Fort George, Madras, India, and attested for the 14th Hussars at London on 26 April 1890. He was appointed a Bandsman on 6 November 1893, and was promoted Corporal on 9 October 1899. He served with the Regiment in South Africa from 14 December 1899 until 9 August 1902, and was promoted Sergeant whilst in South Africa on 9 September 1901. Posted to the 20th Hussars on 7 September 1906, he transferred with the rank of Bandmaster to the Leicestershire Regiment on 19 February 1908, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 1 October of that year. He was finally discharged on 18 February 1913 after 22 years and 299 days’ service, having spent the last five years in India.
