Alfred Cottrell was born in London in 1878 and attested for the Coldstream Guards at London on 4 February 1893. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from 21 October 1899 until 6 October 1902, and was promoted Corporal on 25 November 1904. He transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment on 2 April 1905, and on the same day was promoted Sergeant Drummer. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal by Army Order 180 of 1911, before taking his discharge on 17 April 1911 after 18 years and 73 days’ service.
