Three: Sergeant Drummer F. D. Ablett, Scots Guards, later Connaught Rangers

Frederick David Ablett was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 1860, and attested for the Scots Guards at London on 4 April 1876. Appointed a Drummer on 21 July 1881, he served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan from 26 September 1884 until 17 June 1885, and was present at the Battle of Abu Klea on 17 January 1885. He transferred to the Connaught Rangers on 29 February 1888, and was promoted Sergeant Drummer on 1 March of that year. He served with the Connaught Rangers in Malta, Cyprus, and Egypt, before he was finally discharged on 15 April 1897, after 21 years and 12 days’ service.
