Thomas McIneyrey was born on 25 May 1838 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, and attested for the 80th (Staffordshire Volunteers) Regiment of Foot at Rangoon on 25 August 1852. He served with the Regiment during the Second Anglo-Burmese War, before transferring to the 78th Highlanders on 1 February 1854. Appointed a Drummer on 1 June of that year, he served with his new Regiment in Persia, and then in India, where he drummed his way to Lucknow as part of Sir Henry Havelock’s first Relief Force, becoming part of the besieged garrison on arrival. He continued as a Drummer for nearly two further decades, finally being discharged on 1 July 1875 after 20 years and 38 days’ service.
