China 1842 (John O’Neill, Drum 18th. R. Irish Reg. Infantry); India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Dr. J. O’Neill. 18th. Royal Irish Regt.); Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (J. O’Neill. 18th. Regt.) officially impressed naming; Turkish Crimea 1855, British issue (1216 Sergeant . John O’Neill. 18th. Royal. Irish. Regt.) contemporarily engraved naming with minor correction to rank, with large ring suspension; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (1216 Sergt. John O’Neill 1st. Batt. 18th. Foot.) mounted court style, contact marks, very fine and better (5) £1000-1400

John O’Neill was born on 6 January 1826 in Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, and attested for the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot there on 6 January 1840. Appointed a Drummer on 15 December 1842, he was promoted Corporal on 1 March 1857, and Sergeant on 1 February 1860. He was finally discharged on 6 June 1865, after 21 years and 153 days’ service, of which virtually all was spent serving overseas, in Ceylon, China, India, Burma, and the Crimea.
