John Lucy was born on 26 March 1832 at York and attested for the 8th (King’s) Regiment of Foot at Westminster on 26 March 1846. He was appointed a Drummer on 1 March 1847, and served with the Regiment in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny (entitled to Indian Mutiny Medal with clasp Delhi). It was there at Delhi that the Regiment saw some of the hardest fighting of the Mutiny, and Lucy, with a height of 6 feet 4 inches, would have been one of the tallest men on the field. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, he was discharged on 10 May 1870 after 20 years and 46 days’ service, of which over 14 years had been spent soldiering in India.
