Rowland Hill Smith was born on 3 May 1863 in London and attested for the 30th Brigade of Infantry there on 3 May 1877, being posted to the 10th (North Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot. Appointed Bandmaster of the 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment on 23 May 1894, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order of October 1903, and was discharged on 1 June 1902 after 25 years’ service. He was awarded his Meritorious Service Medal per Army Order 137 of July 1932, and died at Hounslow, Middlesex, on 4 May 1948.
