George Charles Stones was born in Brentford, Middlesex, in 1876 and attested for the Manchester Regiment in London on 12 July 1892. Appointed a Drummer on 12 January 1893, he was advanced to Sergeant Drummer on 6 January 1902, and served with the Regiment in South Africa from 13 February until 30 September 1902. Awarded an Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Gratuity, he was discharged on 15 February 1911, after 18 years and 219 days’ service. On the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted for service in his old Regiment on 15 September 1914, and was promoted Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant of the 18th (Service) Battalion. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France from 8 November 1915 until 20 January 1919, and was finally discharged on 18 February 1919, after a further 4 years and 157 days’ service.
