Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith (2594. Sjt. Dr: H. Drew. Dorset. Rgt.) edge bruise, very fine £100-140

Henry Drew was born at Portsea, Hampshire, in 1873, and attested for the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Musician at Portsmouth on 10 December 1887. Appointed a Drummer , he was promoted Corporal on 15 May 1895, and Sergeant on 21 May 1898. He served with the Regiment as a Sergeant Drummer in South Africa from 24 November 1899 until 22 May 1900, and was present at the actions at Tugela Heights, 14 to 27 February 1900, and the subsequent Relief of Ladysmith, 28 February 1900. He was discharged on 30 April 1906, after 18 years and 142 days’ service. He subsequently re-enlisted for service during Great War, and served with the Royal Engineers Postal Section at home from 19 February 1917, before transferring to the Army Reserve on 19 September 1918 and being finally discharged on 28 December 1918, after a further 1 year and 313 days’ service. He died at Fareham, Hampshire, on 21 November 1944.
