E. G. Hanham served as a Sergeant-Drummer with the 1st Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment during the Boer War, and died of disease at Winburg on 27 January 1901.

Sold with a photographic image of the Sergeants of the 1st Battalion about to proceed on Active Service.
