William Stevenson served with the British Fencibles from 1 July 1794 until 19 November 1797, and transferred to the 79th Cameron Highlanders on 20 November 1797. He served with the Regiment in Egypt in 1801, and was awarded a very rare regimental medal for ‘Gallant Conduct’ in Egypt 1801 (Ref Balmer R484) of which only two examples are known. He was discharged on 24 July 1819, after 24 years and 239 days’ service, of which eight and a half years were as a Sergeant.

Stevenson’s Regimental gallantry medal is believed to be in the collection at the West Highland Museum, Fort William.

There are at least 3 known surviving examples of the 79th’s regimental medal for gallantry in Egypy out of the 27 or so awarded
