Thomas Manfield was commissioned Quarter-Master, with the honorary rank of Lieutenant, in July 1912, direct from his services as a Colour-Sergeant and Acting Sergeant-Major in the 4th (Denbighshire) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He went to France in early November 1914 but was invalided home in June 1915. Having then been advanced to Q.M. & Captain in July 1917, he rejoined his old battalion on active service in the same month and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 27 December 1918, refers).

He was subsequently a contributor to Captain C. Ellis’s battalion history, The 4th (Denbighshire) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers in the Great War (1926), in which he received several favourable mentions for his good work as Q.M. Clearly a popular officer and an excellent raconteur - his tales were recounted in the ‘raciest manner’ - Manfield was granted the rank of Q.M. & Major on his retirement in July 1927; sold with copied research.
