Arthur Joseph Case was born in November 1870, the son of Benjamin Case of March, Cambridgeshire. A pre-war regular, he went to France as a Q.M. & Lieutenant in 6th Battalion, South Wales Borderers in September 1915 and, as verified in Atkinson’s regimental history, was wounded in May 1918:

‘At Loisy the companies rejoined the transport, which had been forced by shell fire to quit its bivouac at Vaulx-Varennes on the night of 26-27 May and had had a long march southward through Jonchery, much hampered by terribly crowded roads and harassed by machine-gun fire from German aeroplanes, which inflicted several casualties, the Quarter-Master, Captain Case, being wounded.’

Twice mentioned in despatches - in June 1916 and July 1919 - Case was awarded the O.B.E. and placed on the Retired List as a Q.M. & Captain in March 1920; sold with an original studio portrait photograph, together with regimental band group shot and copied research.
