Frederic Craig Harris was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) in May 1904, in which capacity he served variously as a railway and bridging officer, and instructor in musketry.

Advanced to Captain in June 1914, he was embarked for France in November 1914, where he served in No. 2 (Railway) and No. 4 (Siege) Companies and won a mention in despatches (London Gazette 15 June 1916, refers). He was one time C.O. of the latter unit in the acting rank of Major but was severely wounded and invalided home. Having resigned his commission ‘on account of ill-health caused by wounds’ in April 1919, he was living at Union Mills on the Isle of Man at the time of applying for his campaign medals; sold with copied research.
