David John Hipkiss was born in Bristol and enlisted in the South Wales Borderers in February 1898, aged 18 years, direct from the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion. Having then witnessed active service in South Africa in the period February 1900 to May 1902, including the action near Johannesburg (Queen’s Medal & 3 clasps; King’s Medal & 2 clasps), he was discharged to the Army Reserve in March 1910. Following the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, however, he was appointed a Sergeant in the 1/2nd Monmouthshire Regiment and landed in France on 5 November 1914. He later served as an instructor on the Home Establishment and was awarded the M.S.M. (London Gazette 16 October 1919, refers); sold with copied research.
