Four: Colour-Sergeant George Barnes, 43rd Light Infantry

Inftry.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (2679 Color-Sergt. George Barnes 43rd Foot) edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise good fine and better (4) £1600-1800

George Barnes was born in the Parish of St Stephen’s, Norwich, Norfolk, and enlisted into the 43rd Foot at Norwich on 16 May 1851, aged 19 years 3 months. He was promoted to Corporal on 5 May 1860; Sergeant, 1 December 1860; appointed Colour-Sergeant, 17 July 1863. He transferred to the West Suffolk Militia as a supernumerary on 9 June 1869, and was discharged at Suffolk on 2 July 1872. His discharge papers confirm all three campaign medals. Hi s name is also confirmed on Gordon Everson’s roll for the attack on the Gate Pah by the 43rd in New Zealand. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
