John Collins was born at Strokestown, county Roscommon, and attested for the 41st Foot at Mullingar on 30 June 1822, aged 18 years, a shoemaker by trade. He served 21 years 56 days, including 19 years 8 months abroad in the East Indies, Burmah, Scinde and Afghanistan. He was discharged at Canterbury on 21 August 1843, being unfit for further service. He ‘served throughout the Burmese War & was wounded slightly in the left leg & severely in the right side at Allimusjhid, Afghanistan, 5th November 1842. Entitled to a medal for services in Afghanistan, was present in action with the enemy 28th April, 29th May, 30th August & 29th September 1842, besides several minor affairs in & between the Bolan & Khyber Passes. He is entitled to wear four distinguishing marks for good conduct. Has a claim for the second division Burmese Prize Money.’ The medal roll for Ava shows three men of this name in the 41st entitled to the clasp. Sold with copied discharge papers.
