George Barksby was born in Gibraltar and enlisted in the South Wales Borderers as a boy recruit in May 1886. In his subsequent career of 25 years with the Colours he served in Egypt, Gibraltar and India but did not witness active service. He was advanced to Colour-Sergeant in the 1st Battalion in April 1903, awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1907 and discharged in March 1911.

Re-enlisting in his old regiment in September 1914, he was appointed C.Q.M.S. in the 5th Battalion, in which capacity he served until transferring to the 14th Battalion in early 1916. Then in October 1917 he joined the 6th Battalion in France, where he remained actively employed until returning to the Home Establishment in August 1918. A further tour of duty in the 3rd Battalion in France having ensued in the closing weeks of the war, he was demobilised in March 1919. He died in Breconshire in March 1945.
