James Jelly was born in Frome, Somerset and enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in August 1886, aged 18 years. He subsequently served the Colours for 22 years but saw no active service, other than a tour of duty during the occupation of Crete 1897-98. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1908, he was discharged in the rank of Sergeant Instructor at the end of the same year. Re-enlisting in his old regiment in August 1914, aged 47 years, he served as a R.Q.M.S. on the home establishment until transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1918; sold with copied research.

Sham Jelly was born in Westminster, London and enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in August 1890. He subsequently served the Colours for 22 years but saw no active service, remaining employed on the Home Establishment. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1909, he was discharged in January 1913; sold with copied research.
