SUSSEX, Gatwick, Gatwick, 1903, an enamelled brass badge by Bowman Ltd, back stamped 626, 33 x 25mm, 8.56g; Gatwick, 1922, an enamelled brass badge by Pratt & Co, stamped 136; Gatwick, 1934, an enamelled brass badge by W.O. Lewis, back stamped 68; Gatwick, 1936, enamelled brass badges by W.O. Lewis (3), two different styles, backs all stamped 69 [6]. First about fine, second very fine, third extremely fine, others mint state and unworn, in original green card box of issue £40-60

In 1890 the de Gatwick family of landowners sold some land to the newly-established Gatwick Race Course Co. The racecourse, located adjacent to the London-Brighton railway, opened in October 1891. The final meeting was held in June 1940. In 1957 the decision was taken to site London’s second airport on land encompassing the racecourse and the stables and infrastructure were demolished in 1960
