William Molyneux, 2nd Earl of Sefton (1772-1838), Croxteth Hall, Liverpool; educ. Eton and Oxford; Whig MP for Droitwich 1816-31; created Baron Sefton of Croxteth 1831. An enthusiastic gambler and sportsman and friend of the Prince Regent until he began championing the cause of the Princess of Wales, the Earl was a keen horseman who helped found the Four-in-Hand Club and leased land to help establish what is now Aintree racecourse.

Aintree racecourse, best known for the Grand National steeplechase which was first run in 1839, had hosted flat racing in the years prior to that, thanks to the generosity of the Earl of Sefton
