Trial of Henry Sacheverell, 1710, a cast and chased silver medal, unsigned, bust three-quarters right, rev. bust of Pope Innocent XI right, 35mm, 12.03g (MI II, 368/211). About very fine, rare £80-100

Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724), English political preacher, the son of a High Church rector. He held the Staffordshire vicarage of Cannock, when in 1709 he delivered the two sermons which have given him his place in history. In these he assailed the Revolution Settlement and the Act of Toleration, leading to his impeachment in 1710. His trial lasted from 27 February until 20 March; he was found guilty and suspended from preaching for three years. This medal, probably struck around the time of his trial and showing his allegiance to the Papacy, would have circulated amongst his many supporters
