The Peter Preston-Morley Library of Token Books, Whitting, P.D., Coins, Tokens and Medals of the East Riding of Yorkshire, York, 1969, 80pp, 16 plates. Publishers’ white card, a fine copy; with an interesting correlation of the different varieties of Hull tokens in the Sykes, British Museum and Hird collections, and the original purchase slip for the lot of 94 Hull tokens bought by Sykes at the Fewster sale in 1898, tipped-in (£20-30)

When compiling this book Philip Whitting (1903-88), the well known Byzantinist, was denied access to the famous Hird collection of 17th century Yorkshire tokens [auctioned in 1974] and, like other Yorkshire numismatists, was unaware that William Sykes’ collection survived intact in the hands of the family in Bridlington until auctioned in 1986
