The 1927 volumes include the important two-part article ‘Unpublished seventeenth-century tokens in the collection of William Gilbert’ by W. Gilbert, incorporating three fine plates. Gilbert (c.1878-1944) started to dispose of the non-Essex portion of his countrywide collection soon after publication; the County Museum at Aylesbury bought his Buckinghamshire tokens, 57 pieces in all, for £40 in August 1929 (see lot 1023).
