Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), one of modern India’s greatest poets, was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature, 1913. He was born in Calcutta and studied at Bengal Academy and University College, London. He founded the Visva-Bharati school at Calcutta, dedicated to emerging Western and Indian philosophy and education, in 1901; it became a university in 1921.
