Colombia, Quatercentenary of the Founding of Bogota, 1938, a plated bronze medal by A. Mauquoy for Fisch, bust of Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada left, in high ruff, rev. arms, 70mm (Vandamme/Bernier 227). A little rubbed on forehead, otherwise about extremely fine, scarce; in original blue fitted case (£30-50)

Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada (1496-1579), Spanish conquistador, founder of the city of Santa Fe de Bogota in 1538. Quesada, who spent many futile years searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, died a leper; he was thought to have been the model for Cervantes’ Don Quixote (see lot 973)
