Estimate: £50–£70

Italy: Papal States, Leo XI, Medici, 1605, a copper medal by G. Rancetti, bearded bust left in cap and cope, rev. bees swarming around the body of a lion, 36mm (Lincoln 876; W & V 33). Struck from rust-marked dies, about extremely fine (£50-70)

Leo XI (1535-1605) was Pope for only 27 days [1-27 April 1605]; the symbolism of the dead lion [Leo] reverse would suggest that the medal was issued as a memorial
