THE PRESTON-MORLEY BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COLLECTION, Eton College, a bronze award medal for Rowing, type 4, unsigned [by Birmingham Medal Co], similar, named (T.M. Bland, House Fours, Eton 1921), 39mm (D & W 195). Good very fine (£40-50)

Sir Thomas Maltby Bland, Kt, TD, DL (1906-68), of Copdock, Ipswich, at Eton 1918-25, and Captain of the Oppidans, 1925; coxed Mr Conybeare’s boat in the Junior House Fours, May 1921, and the same boat to second place in the final of the House Fours, 23 July 1921 (medal). He also took part in the Novice Pulling, June 1923, but was unplaced, and left Eton in 1925 for Magdelene College, Cambridge. In the Second World War he was a Major in the Royal Artillery, subsequently joining Barclays Bank and rising to become deputy chairman. He was High Sheriff of Suffolk, 1952, president of the Institute of Bankers, 1956-8, vice-chairman of East Suffolk County Council, 1957-63 and the chairman of Tollemache and Cobbold Breweries.
