Sir Ambrose Heal (1872-1959), chairman of Heal & Son Ltd, furniture designers and manufacturers, Tottenham Court Road, lived at Baylin’s Farm, Knotty Green, Beaconsfield. Following an apprenticeship to a cabinet maker, he entered the family business in 1893. He was made a partner in 1898, became managing director in 1907 and chairman in 1913. World famous as a designer of furniture, particularly in the Art Deco period, Heal was an avid collector of 18th century tradesmen’s cards, early calligraphic works and modern press books; he also actively pursued Buckinghamshire 17th trade tokens and was a correspondent of Manton and Hollis, the authors of the 1933 county reference. His tokens were sold by a descendant in October 1997 [see Preston-Morley Part I and lot 1023 in the present sale]
