Auction Catalogue
A Roman ‘child’s’ ring, the tiny wire band centred with a closed back collet set rectangular cabochon green/blue stone, between beaded shoulders, external diameter of ring 13mm. £200-300
Although rings of this small size are commonly catalogued as ‘child’s rings’, C.C.Oman, in his catalogue of rings in the Victoria and Albert Museum, notes: “Rings are now commonly worn on the bottom joint of the finger, but in the past the upper joints were also used, the top joint probably only by ladies. It will be seen, therefore, that small rings must not necessarily be considered as having been made for children, although these also shared in this prevailing form of luxury.” See Oman, C.C., Victoria and Albert Museum, Catalogue of Rings, 1930, Anglia Publishing, 1993.
