Kings of Mercia, WITHDRAWN
Ludica (825-7), Penny, London, no moneyer’s name, diademed bust right, + lvdica rex mer, rev. + lvn donia civit in three lines across field, 1.22g/12h (EMC 2016.0014; Naismith –; BLS –; N –; S –). Slightly bent, otherwise better than very fine, UNIQUE £8,000-10,000
Very few coins of Ludica are known; all the others are without a mint signature. They were struck by the moneyers Eadgar, Eadnoth and Werebald and are normally attributed to an uncertain East Anglian mint, possibly Ipswich. For a mint-signed coin of London to turn up is as unexpected as it is important, both numismatically and historically
