Shackleton, enlisted in Manchester, and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry whilst serving with No.4 Traffic Control Company, Military Foot Police (a unit comprising Military Foot Police N.C.O.s and Private soldiers from the Army Cyclist Corps) at the Canal Bridge, Hermies, France, December 1917.
