56th (West Essex) Regiment Officer’s Shako Plate 1829-44 and a Regimental Embroidered Padded Oval Badge, the first a very fine and rare example to the Battalion Company officers gilt crowned eight pointed star overlaid with a multi rayed silver star in the centre of which and on a ground of blue enamel gilt laurel sprays enclosing a castle and key for Gibraltar, on two of the arms of the silver star are gilt battle honours ‘Moro’ and ‘Gibraltar’, below the gilt laurels a small oval panel in gilt with raised lettering ‘LV1’, the reverse of the plate with original fixing loops and double fixing wires behind the crown, the orb and cross of the crown with some strengthening to the rear and a small section of the blue enamel centre lacking, otherwise the plate retains 100% original fire gilt and is in exceptionally fine condition. The second item of oval outline 16 x 13 cms displays on a purple velvet ground a captured French eagle of the 62nd regiment over the numerals ‘56’, all within a border of gold orris cord and purl gold wire, the reverse with period paper backing, very good condition (2) £1000-1500

Note: The second item despite the appearance of 56 relates to the 2nd Battalion the Essex Regiment (late 56th) as the eagle of the 62nd French Regiment captured at the Battle of Salamanca was in fact conferred on the 44th (East Essex) Regiment but only in 1902.
