52nd (Oxfordshire Light Infantry) Regiment Officer’s Short Tailed Service Coatee and Wing Epaulettes c. 1820-22, a most rare example, the coatee of scarlet cloth with buff facings and turn backs these embellished with silver bullion strung bugle horns, the 7.9 cm stand up collar with single buff lace cord decoration and small silver plated finial buttons these are open back, the breast of the coatee set with 2 x 10 plated buttons placed in pairs, these are closed back and bear the back mark Jennens & Co., London, the 10 cm round cuffs with four single lace cord decorations each with four large plated buttons again all closed back. The ornately patterned rear skirts with white trim to the false pockets and short cord decoration complete with eighteen large plated buttons again all with closed back. The pattern for all buttons is consistent being the crown over 52 within laurel sprays and with ‘Oxfordshire’ along the bottom rim. The ornate wings of red cloth with silver bullion fringes two lines of plated curb chain decoration and linked to the central ornament being of raised plated format mounted with plated laurel sprays and gilt bugle horn, both wings with trade labels ‘Cater & Co., Pall Mall, London’, the retaining buttons near the collar of plain plated format; the wings were retained by a narrow scarlet cord to fix under the arm. The coatee is lined throughout with original quilted material, slight staining to the front of the coatee and some fraying to the top collar edge otherwise in good overall condition for its age £4,000-5,000
