An original commission warrant appertaining to Lieutenant-Colonel G. R. Crosfield, C.B.E., D.S.O., T.D., Royal Welch Fusiliers, South Lancashire Regiment, Imperial Yeomanry and Suffolk Regiment, the warrant in the name of ‘G. R. Crosfield, Esq.’ and appointing him a Captain (temporary rank) in the Land Forces and Imperial Yeomanry, dated 17 April 1900, in good condition £60-70

George Rowlandson Crosfield was born in April 1877 and was educated at Harrow. Commissioned in the temporary rank of Captain in the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment in April 1900, he was given command of the 77th Company, Imperial Yeomanry and saw action in South Africa (Queen’s Medal & 5 clasps); in November 1900 he is recorded as being seriously ill with enteric fever at Heilbron Hospital. In February 1915, Crosfield went to France as 2nd-in-command of the 14th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment. He subsequently commanded the 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment and the 10th Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, and had a leg amputated as a consequence of wounds received at St. Eloi in March 1916. Notwithstanding his injuries, he passed as an Observer in the Royal Air Force in 1918. Crosfield later served as Chairman of the British Legion and was appointed an Officer of the French Legion of Honour, a Commander of the White Lion of Czecoslovakia and a Commander of the Star of Roumania. He died in London in August 1962.
