British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse Matabeleland 1893, 1 clasp, Rhodesia 1896 (J. H. Hulbert. Qurtr. Master Sergt. Victoria Column) suspension claw re-pinned, nearly very fine £700-900

John Henry Hulbert attested for the British South Africa Company Police on 27 February 1890 and served in “E” Troop. He was discharged at his own request from the same troop on 16 September 1891. He served as a quartermaster-sergeant in the Victoria Rangers in the Matabele War of 1893. Whilst serving as a Lieutenant in Gifford’s Horse in the Matabele Rebellion of 1896, he was wounded in the ankle in the action fought by Lieutenant-Colonel Hon. M. H. Gifford at Fonseca’s Farm on 6 April 1896. Lieutenant Hulbert held numerous mining interests in Rhodesia as well as an interest in a diamond venture in the Congo. He died at Queen’s Mine, Bembesi, Matabeleland, on 2 November 1918. His Mashonaland 1890 medal was never claimed. Sold with copied archive research.
