James Kane was born in Rochester, Kent. A Shoemaker by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Bristol on 11 May 1877, aged 18 years, 4 months. He served in India with the South Irish Division R.A., October 1885-March 1895, taking part in the Burma Expedition, 1885-86 and the Black Mountain Expedition, 1888. He was discharged at his own request on 15 July 1896. With copied service papers - clasps confirmed.
