Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Albuhera (Hugh Parbut, Serjt. 39th Foot) edge bruise and light marks overall, otherwise better than very fine £1600-1800

23 single clasp medals for Albuhera to the 39th Foot.

Hugh Parbut (variously spelt on musters) was born at Malpas, Cheshire, and enlisted at Cork on 19 May 1806, aged 20 years, a shoemaker by trade. He was immediately given the rank of Corporal, suggesting that he had prior service in the Militia, and promoted to Sergeant on 16 September 1806, which rank he held until his discharge on 10 January 1832 and admission to the Chelsea out-pension. He served four years in the Peninsula, was severely wounded in the thigh at the battle of Albuhera, and was present at the battles of Busaco, Badajoz, Roi de Molina [Attoyo dos Molinas], Campo Mayor, Albuhera and Lusantes. Served three years with the Army of Occupation in France and the remainder at home. Unfit for further service (WO 97/557 refers). He died at Chester Infirmary on 13 January 1861, aged 79 years, and is buried in Malpas Parish Church, where a slate memorial stone commemorates his relevant details. Sold with full research.
