Edward James Cunningham was born in Gosport on 15 January 1912. Employed as a Skilled labourer at a H.M. Dockyard, he enlisted into the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester on 28 April 1930. With the regiment he served in India, January 1932-November 1937. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 25 May 1938. Recalled in September 1939, he served initially with the Hampshire Regiment and then with the Royal Corps of Signals, serving in North Africa, February-July 1943. As a Signalman in the Royal Corps of Signals he was discharged on 4 November 1943 ‘ceasing to fulfil army physical requirements’.
