Percy George Lancaster was born in Dover, Kent on 22 October 1901. Formerly employed as a Farm Milk Boy, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 26 March 1917 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in September 1917. As such, during the war, he was based on Victory I, November 1917; H.M.S. Moldavia, November 1917-June 1918; Victory I, June 1918; H.M.S. Andes, June 1918-January 1919. Lancaster was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in October 1919 when serving on the battleship H.M.S. KIng George V, and to Able Seaman in June 1920 when on the battlecruiser H.M.S. Renown.
