Stanley Charles Smith was born in London, England. A Farm Labourer by occupation, he enlisted at Kingaroy, Queensland on 9 January 1915. He embarked overseas with the 25th Battalion on 29 June 1915. Transferred to the 5th Field Company Engineers in October 1915 and served in Gallipoli, October 1915-January 1916 and then posted to Egypt until June 1916 when he entered France. Transferred to the 8th Field Company Engineers in February 1916 and then to the 15th Field Artillery Brigade in March 1916. Transferred to the 6th Field Artillery Brigade in January 1917. With copied service papers.
