Harry Smith was born in Coventry, Warwickshire on 23 August 1883. A Miller by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 13 February 1900 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in November 1900. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in August 1901 when on H.M.S. Revenge and Able Seaman in March 1904 when on H.M.S. Drake. He served on the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Minotaur, May 1912-January 1917, being advanced to Leading Seaman in October 1915 and seeing action at the battle of Jutland, 31 May/1 June 1916. He next served at H.M.S. Excellent (Portsmouth), January 1917-May 1918, being promoted to Petty Officer in February 1918. For the remainder of the war he served on the battleship H.M.S. Neptune, May 1918-January 1919. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in July 1921 when on the battleship H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth. Pensioned ashore and joined the R.F.R. in 1923. With copied service paper and copied photographs of H.M.S. Minotaur.
