Henry Forker was born in Dunfermline, Fifeshire in May 1889. A Miner by occupation, he enrolled in the 6th (Fifeshire) Volunteer Battalion Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) on 21 January 1905. He joined the Territorial Force in 1908, his unit becoming the 7th (Fifeshire) Battalion (TF) Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). On 1 July 1908 Forker was appointed Piper in the Battalion. With the start of the Great War he was mobilized with the 7th Battalion Royal Highlanders and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 2 May 1915. The battalion formed part of the 153rd Infantry Brigade in the 51st (Highland) Division. Pipers of the battalion usually served in the ranks where they were employed as stretcher bearers and dispatch runners. They were also latterly trained as anti-aircraft Lewis-gunners. Piper Forker was appointed unpaid Lance-Corporal on 4 January 1916. On 6 April following he returned home and was discharged at St. Andrews on 17 April 1916 on ‘Termination of Engagement’. He was awarded the T.F.E.M. by Army Order 65, of February 1921. Following his discharged Forker resided at 9 Will Street, Dunfermline and served with the 8th Volunteer Battalion Royal Highlanders.
