Frederick Charley was born in Kentisbury, Devon and enlisted at Barnstaple. Serving in the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry, he entered the Egyptian theatre of war on 31 December 1915. Serving in the 16th (Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry and Royal North Devon Hussars) Battalion Devonshire Regiment, he was killed in action, Palestine, 3 December 1917, aged 22 years. He was buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery. He was the son of John and Mary Jane Charley, of Kentisbury, Devon and husband of Caroline Charley, of Nutcombe Farm, Combe Martin, Devon.
