John George Jonas was born in Ivybridge, Devon. A Carpenter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as Carpenter’s Crew on 31 August 1897 and was advanced to Leading Carpenter’s Crew in January 1901. Promoted to Shipwright in October 1905 when on Cornwall and Leading Shipwright in August 1907 when on Fantome. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in September 1912 when on the armoured cruiser King Alfred and on which he was appointed Shipwright 2nd Class in December 1912. During the war he served on the armoured cruiser Suffolk, March 1913-May 1915, being advanced to Shipwright 1st Class in November 1914. He then served on the armoured cruiser Carnarvon, August 1915-January 1918. He was pensioned in September 1919. With copied service papers.
