Hubert John Broderick was born in Durban, Natal. An Engineer by occupation, he served in the suppression of the Natal Rebellion in the Durban Light Infantry and in the German S.W. Africa 1914-15 campaign with the 3rd Mounted Rifles. He attested for service with the South African Expeditionary Forces at Roberts Heights on 28 April 1916. Served overseas with the 8th South African Horse. Discharged on 26 December 1916 due to malaria. With Loyal Service lapel badge, reverse numbered, ‘44 690’; three other badges and a South African medical Council Badge, silver and enamel, reverse named ‘Male 1147 M. Kemp 1927’. Together with copied service papers and other research.

Basil John Broderick was born on 22 October 1922, the son of Hubert John Broderick. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for Volunteer Units of the U.D.F. on 6 February 1941. Served in the Technical Service Corps in North Africa. Posted missing on 20 November 1942, later confirmed as a prisoner-of-war. Held in Italy at Camp 65 (Gravina near Altamura) and then in Germany at Camp 4A (Hohenstein). With medal forwarding slip and copied service papers and other research.
