William Musgrove was born in Eastney, Portsmouth, Hampshire. A Servant by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Hampshire Regiment, he attested for regular service with the North Staffordshire Regiment at Portsmouth on 11 January 1893, aged 18 years, 3 months. Appointed Sergeant in April 1901, he attained the rank of Colour Serjeant in May 1904. He served in South Africa, January 1900-October 1902 and was mentioned in Lord Robert’s despatch for his distinguished service in South Africa. Discharged on 15 February 1905.
