Benjamin Ellis was born in Lambeth, London. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Cameron Highlanders at London on 12 February 1892, aged 18 years, 2 months. With the regiment he served in Malta, September 1892-February 1895; in Gibraltar, February 1895-October 1897 - where he sustained injuries on 11 August 1896; Egypt and Sudan, October 1897-March 1900; and South Africa, March 1900-October 1902. With copied service papers.
