John Stokes was born in the Parish of Holl, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and enlisted for the Grenadier Guards at Swindon on 8 January 1877, aged 18 years 6 months. He served in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85 with the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, and was one of 2 officers and 34 other ranks of the battalion who served in the Guards Camel Regiment at the battle of Abu Klea. He was discharged ‘time expired’ on 10 January 1889. Sold with copied discharge papers and medal roll extract.
