A Light Brigade group of three awarded to Sergeant John Thornton, 8th Hussars, who was severely wounded at Kattara in May 1858 and died in India in June 1861

Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (J. Thornton. 8th Hussars.) officially impressed naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Sergt. John Thornton, 8th Hussars.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (Serjt. John Thornton 8th Hussars) depot impressed naming, fitted with replacement swivel bar suspension, good very fine (3) £3000-3600

Sergeant John Thornton was severely wounded on 14 August 1858, when Roberts defeated Tantia Topi at Bunass River. The 8th Hussars had one man killed and two sergeants and 10 men wounded in this action, also known as Kattara. He died at Meerut on 21 July 1861. Sold with copied roll entries confirming all four Crimean clasps and copied muster roll entries. Thornton is not positively confirmed as a charger at Balaklava but it is confirmed that he was with the regiment throughout the relevant period.
